Ninja weapons are weapons used by the Ninja Tribe. They are the traditional weapons of ninjas and the basis for many other types of weapon that have evolved since then. The list of these weapons is extensive and diverse, with some being more commonly used than others. There is no fixed number of what constitutes a ninja tool, so a complete list would be too long to include here. The history behind these weapons is often shrouded in mystery and legend, which has led to their inclusion in various treasure troves throughout Japan. 1. Ninja Swords Ninja swords are typically a long bladed weapon with a straightedge and a symmetrical cross-section. Many ninjas used both edged and blunt versions for attacking and defensive purposes, retaining the use of ninja weapons such as swords, knives and spears within their fighting style. The design of ninja swords varied considerably between regions, the shapes changing to be more effective in each area. The katana was shorter than other blades and had curved edges that could slice through an opponent's arms rather than cutting across his chest or back like other blades, making it easier for a small or weak person to use effectively. 2. Shuriken A shuriken is a traditional Japanese throwing weapon commonly used for both offensive and defensive purposes. Originating from the mid-eighth century, the first recorded instance of its use was in 604 A.D., when it was reportedly used by the Emperor Dōkyō in suppressing a major rebellion. The first shuriken were known as "tanzaku", or "paper shuriken". These ninja weapons were small pieces of metal that were thrown by hand, although they may have had some form of stabilizing tail. They were used as military weapons until the end of World War II. The word "shuriken" itself, however, did not come into use until after it was introduced to the West in the late 16th century. Afterwards, many variations began to appear. Some had points or blades attached; others had multiple points or blades and could be thrown in multiples – much like modern day flash grenades. 3. Nunchucks Nunchucks are a two-piece weapon consisting of two sticks connected by a chain or rope. The device is used primarily as an impact weapon in law enforcement, military and self-defense applications for bludgeoning and blocking. The nunchaku consists of two sticks linked by a short length of cord or chain. They are usually outfitted with handles on both ends; one end is held in the hand - often in a reverse grip – while the other stick makes contact with the opponent. The use of this weapon offers numerous advantages, including its affordable price, broad availability to martial artists (of all skill levels), and ease of use during close combat situations such as fighting multiple opponents at once. 4. Kunai Knife A Kunai knife is an edged tool, traditionally used by ninja. It consists of a straight or slightly curved bladed staff with a point on one end and a circular hand grip on the other. For extended use, the blade could also be attached to the shorter pole with rope and secured to the user's forearm, although more often it had its own sheath. Kunai knives were usually made from iron with one or two edges being sharpened for cutting; instead of being set into a wooden or synthetic handle, it was tied onto the staff tang on both ends so that it could not be removed without disassembling the whole weapon. 5. Wooden Swords As you probably know, there are a lot of different types of wooden swords. The traditional wooden swords in Asia that some people still use are called a Bike Yake. It has a straight handle and one edge with two sharp edges on the opposite side to give it more power when striking an opponent. A Buke Yake is typically used by Japanese Kendo masters (the type of martial arts). Ninja weapons are a Popular Choice! In today's society, it is becoming more and more common to see the popularity of Ninja weapons, whether they are in movies or video games. This is due to the fact that these weapons represent power, surprise and destruction. The name "Ninja" has even been used as a method of describing any person who uses concealed weapons such as guns. The reasons for this are not clear but some people believe it all started with true stories about Ninjas during Japan's warring states period. The other reason for their popularity may be that they offer easy access to them in order to obtain a sense of peace in the modern world where there is an overwhelming amount of violence and chaos.
